Membrane stripping isn’t as effective as other types of induction, such as using medications. One study found that membrane sweeping could increase the likelihood of spontaneous labor within 48 hours. Membrane stripping might be most effective for women who are past their due dates. The goal is to stimulate labor and safely deliver before the pregnancy is beyond 41 weeks, and membrane stripping may occur as early as 39 weeks. Of these, only 75 percent delivered by 41 weeks’ gestation. The JCGO study reported that after a membrane sweep, 90 percent of women delivered by 41 weeks compared to women who didn’t receive the membrane sweep. A 2011 review of available studies concluded that the efficacy depends on how far along in pregnancy a woman is, and whether or not she uses other induction methods. Rebecca Dekker, the founder of Evidence Based Birth says that membrane sweeps potentially reduce the length of your labour, but only by four days: "If your membranes are swept at 41 weeks, this can lower your chance of having to go past 42 weeks and needing an induction at 42 weeks.Experts still question whether or not membrane stripping is really effective. "A Cochrane review (which is a very reliable source) suggests that sweeps ‘might' reduce the likelihood of formal induction, but that more research is needed into whether sweeps are effective in starting labour. ![]() "It’s one of those areas of women’s healthcare, of which there are far too many, where the answer is: ‘we don’t have enough evidence’" says Milli Hill. Once a woman has had a sweep, there's no way of knowing what would have happened otherwise. There is no reliable evidence that a membrane sweep will bring on labour. But if you are happy to have one, then that’s also up to you." What is membrane sweep success rate? "You don’t have to feel any pressure to have a sweep if you don’t want one.
